From Whipped Slave to Resilient Fighter, whipped Peter exposes his severely whipped back. Gordon, also known as whipped Peter, was a black slave on a Louisiana plantation owned by John and Bridgett Lyons. He was brutally whipped by his overseers, leaving him with deep, horrific scars on his back. In March 1863, he made a daring escape from the plantation, crossing rivers and swamps and fled over 40 miles in 10 days to cover his scent from the bloodhounds chasing him. He carried onions in his pockets and rubbed them on his body to throw the dogs off his trail. Despite the odds against him, Gordon made it to Union soldiers and joined the Union Army. But his nightmare was far from over. He was later captured by the Confederacy, where he was brutally beaten and left for dead. But he miraculously escaped once more and fought bravely in the Civil War. When his photo of his scarred back was taken, Gordon said, Overseer, Arte, carrier whipped me.
