SEJARAH LUAR KISAH TRAGIS SEORANG GORDON PAHLAWAN AMERIKA

Gordon, who became famously known as Whipped Peter, was an enslaved man on a plantation in Louisiana, owned by John and Bridget Lyons. He endured unspeakable cruelty at the hands of his overseers, suffering brutal whippings that left deep and permanent scars across his back.
In March 1863, after enduring years of suffering, Gordon made a courageous escape from the plantation. Over the course of ten days, he traveled more than 40 miles, navigating through treacherous swamps and rivers. To evade the bloodhounds sent to track him, Gordon used an ingenious method: he carried onions in his pockets and rubbed them on his skin, hoping the strong odor would mask his scent.
Against all odds, Gordon finally reached Union soldiers and enlisted in the Union Army. But his journey was far from over. He was later captured by Confederate forces, who brutally tortured him and left him for dead. However, in a remarkable turn of events, Gordon managed to escape once again, continuing to fight bravely in the Civil War.
One of the most enduring images from his story is a photograph of his back, scarred from the severe whippings he endured. In the photo, Gordon's testimony speaks of the cruelty he experienced at the hands of his overseer, Arte Carrier. He recalled, "Arte Carrier whipped me. I was bedridden for two months because of the wounds from those whippings. After it happened, my master came and fired the overseer."
Gordon's story is one of incredible resilience and courage. Despite the overwhelming hardships he faced, he managed to survive, escape, and contribute to the fight for freedom during one of the most pivotal moments in American history.
