Natural gas is found below the Earth's surface and is made up mostly of methane and other hydrocarbons.
Natural gas is considered one of the cleanest fossil fuels because it emits less carbon (about 50% less than coal) and other pollutants like sulfur and nitrogen oxides.
It is mainly used in its gaseous form, which requires an extensive network of pipes. Since it is lighter than air, transporting it is a problem, especially under the oceans. It is therefore liquefied and converted into LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) to facilitate its transfer, particularly for export.
It is mainly used for power generation, heating and as a cooking gas. The gas can also be used for air conditioning, lighting and as an alternative fuel for vehicles
Here are the top 10 natural gas producers in the world according to the ICA World Fact Book.
Rank 10: Indonesia
Japan and Singapore are the main markets for Indonesian natural gas. They are largely overshadowed by huge coal exports, with Indonesia being the world's second largest coal exporter
These ten countries alone contribute more than 60% of the natural gas in the world. Many of them are also major oil producers
Rank 9: Algeria
Algeria is the leading exporter of liquefied natural gas (LNG) and the fourth exporter of natural gas
Its economy is entirely dependent on oil and gas exports, contributing 30% of its GDP
Rank 8: Saudi Arabia
Although Saudi Arabia has the fourth largest reserves of natural gas, the focus is on oil
Natural gas is considered a by-product of oil production and has been flared until recently.
Rank 7: China
China is arguably the fastest growing country in the world, but it is also a major producer and importer of natural gas
China also holds the record for the largest production of energy from a renewable source.
Rank 6: Norway
The only European country on this list, Norway, derives most of its domestic energy from hydroelectricity, exporting much of its natural gas
This makes it the world's third largest exporter of natural gas
Rank 5: Iran
Iran, one of the richest regions in fossil fuels, also has exceptionally high consumption and exports very little natural gas. Exports are also expected to decline even further as the region develops
Rank 4: Qatar
Qatar is heavily dependent on natural gas, both economically and for its national energy needs. Natural gas accounts for around 40% of exports and around 79% of domestic energy consumption
Rank 3: Canada
Canada is the third largest producer and second largest exporter of natural gas. Needless to say, a large portion (98%) of Canadian exports go to its insatiable neighbor to the south, the United States of America.
Rank 2: United States of America
Although America ranks second and produces just under 20% of the world's natural gas,
it has to import more than 55 billion cubic meters of natural gas each year due to its very high consumption rate. It is also the 4th importer and the world's largest consumer of natural gas.
Rank 1: Russia
Russia alone accounts for 20% of global natural gas production and is also the largest exporter
More than 94% of natural gas production in Russia is controlled by Gazprom, a company owned by the Russian government. Gazprom also holds the record for the largest natural gas extractor.
