Lecture Velazquez Titian Miguel Falomir 1 12 2023

Miguel Falomir Faus, Director of the Museo Nacional del Prado, Madrid

In 2017, Miguel Falomir Faus was appointed Director of the Museo Nacional del Prado, having previously served as both Head of Department of Italian and French Painting (to 1700) and Deputy Director for Collections and Research at the museum. During his tenure, Falomir made significant advances in the study of the museum’s Italian Renaissance paintings and was responsible for numerous temporary exhibitions on the subject. Falomir is a renowned expert on Titian (Tiziano Vecellio), an Italian artist whose influence over Spanish painter Diego Velázquez cannot be overstated.

This lecture will focus on Titian as an intellectual, artistic, and social model for Velázquez. In it, Falomir will pay particular attention to the artists’ relationships with the court, how both artists fulfilled the commissions they received, and how they behaved within the court. It is tempting to think that Titian, who had many followers but no ideal heir, ended up having him in the Sevillian painter.
