Katana Vs Tachi Not Your Choice

It’s often discussed whether the sharp edge should be up or down or the handle should be on the left or right. To make a long story short, Uchi-katana must have the sharp edge up, and Tachi must have the sharp edge down. Both have the handle always on the left. This is because this is the way to show the “front side” of each blade.

There is a front and back side to katanas, the front side for Uchi-katana, and this is the front side for Tachi. You can figure that out by seeing which side of the tang has the swordsmith's signature. You can’t randomly decide which side you want that katana to be up. It’s already decided by the type of katana and its design. Please check out my online lessons if you want to learn katana techniques.
