Five main types of blood vessels
arteries, arterioles, capillaries, venules, and veins
Arteries
-A blood vessel that carries blood away from the heart.
-continuously divide into medium, and branch out into the body.
-medium arteries further branch into smaller arteries called arterioles.
arterioles
-enter tissue and branch out into capillaries.
capillaries
-have thin walls which allow for exchange of substances between the blood and tissues.
venules
-small veins formed by groups of capillaries.
-these small venules merge to form progressively larger blood vessels called veins.
veins
- blood vessels that convey blood from the tissues back to the heart.
