Microsoft Excel Tutorial - Trick to use Fill Series to quickly fill 100,000 numbers in Excel.
Welcome to the MrExcel netcast, where we bring you the best Excel tips and tricks to help you become an Excel pro. In this episode, we will be discussing how to use the Fill Series feature to quickly fill from 1 to 100,000. This is a game-changing trick that will save you hours of manual work.
If you've been following our previous episodes, you may have learned about the CTRL key trick to extend numbers using the fill handle. But what if you need to fill from 1 to 100,000? That's where this trick comes in. I learned this from my professor at the University of Western Michigan during a live power Excel seminar. And let me tell you, it's a game-changer.
To use this trick, simply type the number 1 in any blank cell, select it, and then go to the Home tab and click on Fill, followed by Series. Make sure to change the last number to 100,000 and click OK. And just like that, your numbers are filled in seconds. It's a beautiful, beautiful, beautiful trick that will save you a ton of time and effort.
But what if you need to fill a hundred thousand names instead of numbers? Don't worry, we've got you covered. In a previous episode, we showed you how to create a custom list with names like Apple, Banana, Cherry, and so on. Now, to fill a hundred thousand of those names, simply type the first name, then type A100002 in the name box and press Shift+Enter. This will select the cell and allow you to fill from the current cell. Then, go to Fill, followed by Fill Series, and click OK. And just like that, you have a hundred thousand names filled in no time.
To recap, this trick is a lifesaver when it comes to filling a large range of numbers or names. Simply type the starting number or name, go to Fill, then Series, and make sure to change the last number or name. And don't forget the cool trick using Shift+Enter in the name box. It's just one of the many tips and tricks you can find in our book "MrExcel XL", which is filled with over 40 Excel tips, cartoons, cocktails, tweets, and jokes.
We would also like to give a special thanks to the Accounting Department of Western Michigan University for sharing this amazing trick with us. And of course, thank you for tuning in to another netcast from MrExcel. Don't forget to click the "i" in the top-right corner to purchase our book and stay tuned for more Excel tips and tricks in our future episodes. See you next time!
